Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was tragically shot and killed on December 4, 2024, in what authorities describe as a targeted attack. The incident occurred outside the Hilton Midtown hotel in Manhattan, where Thompson was attending an investor conference. A masked gunman approached him from behind and fired multiple shots before fleeing the scene.
Thompson, 50, had been with UnitedHealthcare since 2004 and was appointed CEO in April 2021. He was known for his leadership in expanding the company's global, employer, individual, specialty, and government benefits businesses.
Prior to his death, Thompson was reportedly under investigation by the Department of Justice for alleged insider trading. He had exercised stock options and sold shares worth $15.1 million before a federal antitrust investigation became public, which subsequently led to a decline in the company's stock price.
The New York Police Department has released photos of the suspect and is conducting an extensive manhunt. A reward of $10,000 is being offered for information leading to the arrest of the perpetrator.
UnitedHealth Group expressed profound sadness over Thompson's death, describing him as a highly respected colleague and friend. He is survived by his wife, Paulette, and their two children.
